Beekeeping
This project provides an additional income opportunity for farmers through sales of "organic registered" honey. The project transitions farmers from traditional log hives to more sustainable Kenya top hives. The project harvests honey from over 150 hives once a year and helps farmers sell their honey to a local buyer, Western Honey. The project also includes two annual training days where key farmers from the area learn beekeeping practices and how to train others.
Oil Press
This project aims to provide affordable, locally produced seed oils. This sustainable and profitable business produces cooking oil and other products for both home consumption and sale. By supporting local oil production, the project helps to build community resilience and fosters economic development.
Village Chickens
This project aims to increase the availability of affordable, locally sourced chicken and eggs. This project supports sustainable business ventures for farmers by providing training on chicken welfare, feed, and rearing practices. By assessing the local market demand for chicken and eggs, the project helps farmers develop profitable and sustainable income streams.
Strong Crushing
This promotes the sustainable use of local natural resources by producing construction materials locally. This project provides ongoing support and business training to entrepreneurs involved in stone crushing. By improving loading and sales processes, the project facilitates access to larger markets (Amatheon + Mushingashi) and increases the profitability of these businesses. Data collection on sales will help to monitor the project’s impact and identify areas for further improvement.
Fisheries
This project promotes community-based natural resource management to ensure a long-term, sustainable supply of fish for both community consumption and local businesses. Key activities include:
- Community Engagement: Training volunteer fishermen as data collectors and recruiting and training a dedicated Fisheries Officer.
- Data Collection & Monitoring: Partnering with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) for data collection, fieldwork, and reporting.
- Infrastructure Development: Providing essential equipment and materials for a fully functioning fish processing shed.
- Capacity Building: Conducting monthly farmer training sessions to enhance fishing practices and promote sustainable resource management.
- Market Access: Establishing a designated market location for bulk sales of fish seed to TNC, facilitating improved market access and income generation for fishers.
This project aims to empower local communities to sustainably manage their fisheries resources, improve food security, and create economic opportunities.
Draught Relief
In response to the severe 2024 drought, a seasonal relief program was implemented for farmers, including increased seed packs and loans. To further address food security, an additional program was initiated in Kaindu Chiefdom, focusing on poultry distribution. Over 7,500 chickens were distributed in October 2024 at 6 weeks of age, promoting access to protein (meat and eggs), fostering small businesses, and stimulating trade within the community.
